Budgeting for Figure Skating

Everyone’s preferred method of budgeting is different.  There’s no wrong way to create a “figure skating” specific budget, as long as you have a system that works for you.

One thing we can all agree on is that figure skating is an expensive sport and it’s easy to get swept up in all the excitement before you realize your bank account is dwindling.

Here are 10 things to think about as you try to budget for the skating season.

  1. How many hours per week are you willing to dedicate to skating?

  2. Will you be taking classes?

  3. Will you be working with a coach for private lessons?

  4. How much is the ice time wherever you skate?

  5. Will you be driving far away for ice time?

  6. What’s your average cost of gas each week?

  7. Are you competing this year?

  8. How many competitions/ events/ locations will you be competing at?

  9. Ask your coach if they have an estimate for how much registration at each comp will be.  (Chances are they do because they budget for their teams as well)

  10. What are you wearing to compete in?  I always suggest repurposing old dresses if you can.  This makes them “like new” again.  Buy a pack of rhinestones and stone your dress yourself.  Add a layer of ombre fabric to the underside of your dress or sew on sleeves to an old sleeveless dress.
